Malaysia Dominates the Halal Tourism Space

The global halal travel industry is witnessing a massive shift, and Malaysia is firmly steering the ship. Officially opened by the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC), YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, the 2nd edition of the MATTA Muslim Friendly Travel Fair (MFTF 2026) has kicked off at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur. The launch comes on the heels of a massive win: Malaysia has retained its #1 spot on the Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI) 2026 for the 11th consecutive year, scoring an impressive 83 points.

Re-Engineering the Travel Ecosystem for Modern Needs

Today’s Muslim travelers are no longer just looking for basic halal food options—they are demanding a sophisticated mix of convenience, luxury, and cultural authenticity. Fixed-route travel packages are leading the demand as families look for seamless ways to manage religious requirements alongside leisure. MFTF 2026 serves as a powerhouse channel for operators to tap into this lucrative market, especially as the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign sets its sights on an ambitious 47 million visitors and RM329 billion in tourism receipts.

A Dedicated Marketplace Built for Scale

Taking over 2,700 square meters of exhibition space, this year's fair is MATTA’s largest and most comprehensive dedicated marketplace to date. Featuring 122 booths from 57 participating organizations, the event brings the entire Muslim-friendly travel ecosystem under a single roof. To spice things up for consumers, MFTF 2026 has introduced a Buyers’ Contest, giving visitors who spend a minimum of RM100 the chance to win rewards while lock-in exclusive travel deals.

Powerhouse Partnerships for Future Growth

The fair also marked a historic milestone with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MATTA and the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC). This strategic alliance aims to train roughly 1,000 MATTA members over the next two years under the Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality Assurance and Recognition (MFAR) program, gearing the nation up to welcome a projected 15 million international Muslim arrivals by 2030.

Global Destinations and Smart Banking Step Up

The push toward a more accessible halal ecosystem is strongly backed by corporate and international sponsors. RHB Bank Berhad, the official bank partner, is easing cross-border friction with tools like the RHB Multi Currency Debit Card/-i, supporting transactions in up to 34 currencies. Meanwhile, international destinations are stepping up to show their readiness; the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) returned for a second year, showcasing its new Halal Travel Guide and specialized hospitality training aimed at transforming Macao into a top-tier destination for Muslim travelers worldwide.
