Malaysia and Cambridge Bridge Policy and Data to Reshape Urban Housing

Malaysia's Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), in strategic partnership with the REHDA Institute, hosted the Senior Leadership Circle Roundtable under the newly formed Malaysia–Cambridge Urban Platform (MCUP). Held in Bandar Utama, the high-level session brought together top policy executives, academic leaders from the University of Cambridge, and key Malaysian industry figures to tackle persistent challenges in housing affordability and urban development. The initiative aims to translate cutting-edge global research into actionable policies tailored to Malaysia's real-estate climate.  

Redefining Affordability Beyond the Price Tag

The roundtable prioritized moving the urban development dialogue beyond raw housing targets. REHDA Institute Chairman Dato’ Jeffrey Ng Tiong Lip emphasized that true housing affordability must account for lifetime ownership costs, spatial access, and long-term household financial health rather than focusing solely on initial purchase prices. By demystifying affordability metrics, policymakers and industry leaders can design targeted subsidies, smart infrastructure investments, and viable financial mechanisms that address actual household capacity.  

Harnessing Smart Cities and Digital Twin Tech

A core focus of the session centered on using smart city platforms to solve competing urban demands. Delegates examined how advanced data modeling and digital twin tools can optimize spatial planning across Malaysian cities. Integrating transport, land-use, and demographic data equips planners to deploy mixed-use housing precisely where demand exists, balancing sustainability, liveability, and overall economic accessibility.  

Bridging Research and Practical Policymaking

Speaking at the session, Housing and Local Government Minister YB Tuan Nga Kor Ming highlighted the MCUP's potential to serve as an intellectual bridge connecting research, policy creation, and real-world execution. By pairing global academic expertise from Cambridge with local market knowledge, the platform establishes a collaborative framework intended to co-create evidence-based solutions. The event also marked the official unveiling of REHDA Institute’s latest study, Housing For All: Co-Creating a Needs-Driven Framework.  

Scaling Up Solutions at the Regional Housing Conference 2026

The strategic insights generated during the roundtable form the foundational agenda for the Regional Housing Conference 2026 held at the Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre (MITEC). Centered on "Housing Impact on Sustainable Urban Development & City Planning," the conference convenes regional stakeholders to dive deeper into Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), scalable AI-driven city planning, and innovative green financing instruments.
