A Marathon of Love and Remembrance

Most people celebrate their 67th birthday with a nice dinner, but Lim Shyang Guey plans to cross a finish line instead. On March 28, 2026, the Penang-born runner officially kicked off "Run For Gold," a grueling 2,200-kilometre trek around Peninsular Malaysia. This isn't just a fitness challenge; it’s the fulfillment of a dream Lim shared with his late wife, Joo Lee, who passed away from cancer in 2024. What was once a couple's dream to travel the peninsula on foot has now become a solo mission fueled by love and a desire to help children fighting the same disease.

Running 30km Daily for the "Gold Ribbon"

The initiative takes its name from the Gold Ribbon—the universal symbol for childhood cancer—representing the resilience of young patients. Lim’s itinerary is no walk in the park: he aims to cover 25 to 35 kilometres daily, passing through all 11 states and federal territories. The 90-day journey began at the NCSM–MPPP Home of Hope in Penang and is scheduled to conclude on June 22, just in time for his birthday.

Turning Miles Into Support Services

The ultimate goal of this trans-peninsular run is to raise awareness and vital funds for the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM). The money raised will be funneled directly into childhood cancer support services, including the "Home of Hope" centers, psychosocial care, and survivorship programs that NCSM currently operates across Kuala Lumpur, Perak, and Penang. As NCSM President Dato’ Dr. Saunthari Somasundaram noted, these events are crucial for bringing visibility to childhood cancer and emphasizing that early detection and sustained support truly save lives.

A Community-Powered Journey

Lim won't be staying in luxury hotels along the way. To stay connected with the cause, he plans to stay at homestays and with local hosts, sharing messages of hope with the families he meets. At major towns along the route, NCSM will organize community engagement events to bring together survivors and caregivers. It’s a grassroots effort supported by big names too—IHH Healthcare is providing fitness assessments and physiotherapy at their hospitals to ensure Lim's 66-year-old legs can go the distance, alongside support from brands like ASICS, Garmin, and MCIS Life.

Meeting the Heroes in the Wards

Beyond the pavement, the "Run For Gold" includes heart-to-heart visits to cancer wards at various hospitals. Lim plans to meet with patients, their families, and healthcare professionals to share encouragement. By the time he returns to Penang in June, the hope is that these 2,200 kilometres will have done more than just honor a late wife's memory—they will have built a stronger safety net for every Malaysian child battling cancer.
