Kuala Lumpur, 18 August 2024 – The third edition of the Sungei Wang Plaza National Traditional Lion Dance Competition once again dazzled audiences with its vibrant celebration of Chinese cultural heritage. The event, held over the weekend at the Main Entrance of Sungei Wang Plaza, brought together lion dance troupes from across Malaysia, showcasing the timeless tradition of lion dancing. From 17 to 18 August 2024, spectators were treated to a thrilling display of skill, artistry, and cultural pride, as 20 esteemed troupes competed for the prestigious Champion title.
An Event Steeped in Tradition and Prestige!
This annual competition, organized by Sungei Wang Plaza in collaboration with the Federation of Selangor and Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Association, has grown into one of the most anticipated cultural events in Malaysia. The competition was officially launched on 17 August 2024 at 1 pm by Mr. Leong Lik Thong PJK, Chairman of the Federation of Selangor and Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Association. Over two days, the event drew in large crowds, with both locals and tourists gathering to witness the stunning performances and cheer on their favorite teams.
Excitement Peaks with Grand Prize Presentation Ceremony!
The excitement reached its climax on 18 August 2024, with the grand Prize Presentation Ceremony at 5:30 pm. The ceremony, which featured a mesmerizing Chinese drumming performance, was graced by the presence of Mr. Eric The Hoong Keat, Assistant and representative of Yang Berhormat Tuan Fong Kui Lun, Member of Parliament for Bukit Bintang. Mr. Joseph Teo, General Manager of Sungei Wang Plaza, expressed his delight with the event’s success, highlighting its role in drawing attention to the Bukit Bintang area and promoting the rich cultural traditions of the Chinese community.
Penang Ching Xing Sport and Culture Centre Emerges as Champion!
After two days of fierce competition, Penang Ching Xing Sport and Culture Centre claimed the coveted Champion title, along with a cash prize of RM4,000. The troupe's outstanding performance captivated both judges and audiences, setting them apart from the competition. The Champion trophy was presented by Mr. Eric The Hoong Keat, marking a moment of pride and celebration for the winning team.
Johor and Kepong Teams Shine as Runners-Up!
Persatuan Tarian Naga Dan Singa Tangkak Jin Shan from Johor secured the 1st runner-up position, earning a cash prize of RM3,000. Their dynamic and precise routine impressed the judges, making them strong contenders throughout the competition. Meanwhile, Persatuan Kebudayaan Kepong Hong Teck took home the 2nd runner-up spot, along with a prize of RM1,500. The awards were presented by Mr. Leong Kok Wah, Treasurer of the Federal Territory Dragon and Lion Dance Association, who praised the troupes for their dedication and artistry.
Recognition for All Participants!
In addition to the top honors, consolation prizes of RM800 and finalist prizes of RM300 were awarded to the participating troupes, recognizing their hard work and commitment to preserving the traditional art of lion dancing. The awards were presented by Mr. Ng Yih Chen and Mr. Joseph Teo, who commended the participants for their efforts and encouraged them to continue honing their skills.
