PIKOM LEAD 2024: Malaysia Strengthens Digital Ties with Indian Tech Delegation

PIKOM LEAD 2024, held in the vibrant tech hub of Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur, is the latest milestone in Malaysia’s growing influence in the global digital economy. Officially launched by YB Gobind Singh Deo, Malaysia’s Digital Minister, and supported by H.E. Mr. BN Reddy, High Commissioner of India to Malaysia, the summit successfully positioned Malaysia as a critical bridge between two of the world’s largest economies – India and China – and the dynamic ASEAN market.

Themed “Innovate. Transform.”, this one-day event brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators to discuss vital issues such as digital transformation, cybersecurity, and the global talent shortage. The summit served as a platform for actionable solutions, fostering strategic partnerships, and creating new pathways for collaboration.

Malaysia as the Bridge Between India, China, and ASEAN

One of the key takeaways from the event was the critical role Malaysia plays as the gateway between India and China. According to PIKOM Chairman Ong Chin Seong, Malaysia’s location and strategic positioning make it an ideal hub for connecting the massive economies of India and China with the burgeoning ASEAN market, which boasts a population of over 650 million people.

Ong stated, “By leveraging our strategic location, robust tech ecosystem, and diverse networks, Malaysia can open doors for Indian and Chinese companies to expand their reach, explore new opportunities, and contribute to the region’s economic vibrancy.” He emphasized that Malaysia’s position strengthens its standing on the global stage, driving economic benefits for both local and international markets.

Indian Tech Delegation Explores Collaborative Opportunities

A major highlight of PIKOM LEAD 2024 was the hosting of a 21-member Indian tech delegation facilitated by NASSCOM (National Association of Software and Service Companies) and SEPC (Services Export Promotion Council) of India. The delegation’s visit included B2B sessions co-hosted by MDEC (Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation), tech showcases, and strategic visits to explore collaboration opportunities with Malaysia’s growing innovation ecosystem.

The delegation's participation underscored the importance of Malaysia-India collaboration. As YB Gobind Singh Deo noted, "It is important that we identify sectors in both countries we can work with and bring those partnerships together." He highlighted the importance of supporting SMEs and MSMEs in both countries to ensure that digital transformation becomes more efficient and cost-effective for businesses.

Malaysia’s Role in Driving Digital Transformation

Millie Yong, the PIKOM LEAD 2024 Organising Chair, welcomed the summit’s participants, reinforcing the goal of uniting industry leaders to tackle both global and local challenges, create strategic partnerships, and chart a roadmap for future growth. She noted that the summit complements other PIKOM initiatives like the Future of Cybersecurity Conference and the Digital Excellence Awards, further solidifying Malaysia’s position as a strategic tech hub in the ASEAN region.

Huawei’s Special Recognition Award

As part of the event, PIKOM also presented a Special Recognition Award to Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) for its two decades of contributions in driving innovation, fostering local partnerships, and building a thriving tech ecosystem in Malaysia. The award was received by Oliver Liu, Vice President of Huawei Malaysia’s Public Affairs and Communications Department, who accepted the accolade on behalf of the company.

Looking Ahead: Collaborative Innovation and Growth

PIKOM LEAD 2024 successfully demonstrated Malaysia’s growing influence in the ASEAN digital economy, highlighting the country’s potential as a strategic partner in driving global tech collaborations. With powerful discussions, meaningful partnerships, and a focus on digital transformation, the summit set the stage for a new era of innovation and cross-border cooperation.

As Malaysia continues to strengthen its role in the global tech landscape, events like PIKOM LEAD 2024 play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the industry, bringing together thought leaders, innovators, and business leaders to collaboratively address the pressing challenges and seize the exciting opportunities ahead.
