Nattome, in collaboration with UCSI University, has released Malaysia's first clinical study on the efficacy of fermented soybean for gut health. The study was unveiled during Nattome's The Gut Show showcase, which highlighted the benefits of fermented soybean in treating gut issues, particularly GERD.
The Rise of Gut Health Issues
Modern living has increased the prevalence of gastrointestinal problems due to stress, poor lifestyle, and imbalanced diets. The World Health Organisation reports that one in three people experiences a digestive disorder at any time. In Malaysia, gut diseases ranked as the fourth leading cause of private hospitalization in 2021, with GERD affecting 9.7% of the population.
The Benefits of Fermented Soybean
Assistant Professor Ts Dr. Tan Chung Keat from UCSI University emphasized the role of fermented soybean in naturally treating GERD. He explained that fermented soybean offers more health benefits than its unfermented counterpart, including anti-diabetic, antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory properties. The clinical study showed significant improvements in GERD symptoms and quality of life for participants using Nattome's fermented soybean-based products.
Significant Findings from the Study
The 12-week study involved 110 participants suffering from heartburn, acid reflux, and other GERD symptoms. Results revealed a 47.6% reduction in heartburn, a 40.9% reduction in indigestion, and a 62.9% reduction in regurgitation symptoms. Participants also experienced a marked reduction in inflammatory levels and a 13.3% improvement in overall quality of life.
